Type locality: Brazil, Amazonas State, Itacoatiara, rio Amazonas below Paraná da Eva, collected with 3 m bottom trawl in channel 20-30 m deep, approximately 03° 13’ S, 59° 01’ W.

Etymology: The species name uranophthalmus is derived from the Greek ouranos, meaning "sky" or "heaven", and ophthalmos, meaning "eye", in allusion to the dorsally oriented eyes.
