Emys is a small genus of turtles in the family Emydidae. The genus (sensu lato) is endemic to Europe and North America.

The following two or three species may be assigned to the genus Emys (sensu lato).[2]

Image Scientific name Common name Distribution
Emyssmaller.jpg Emys orbicularis (Linnaeus, 1758) European pond turtle[3] Western Palaearctic
Emys trinacris.JPG Emys trinacris Fritz et al., 2005 Sicilian pond turtle[3][4] Sicily.
Blanding's turtle (Emydoidea blandingii) (17812011862).jpg Emys blandingii (Holbrook, 1838) Blanding's turtle (disputed may belong in the genus Emydoidea)[3][5] central and eastern parts of Canada and the United States

Nota bene: A binomial authority in parentheses indicates that the species was originally described in a genus other than Emys.

The eastern North American species, E. blandingii, is usually separated into its own genus, Emydoidea but this is disputed by some. Similarly, the western North American species, E. marmorata and E. pallida, were recently moved to their own genus, Actinemys.[6]
