Name

Protoblepharon Baldwin, Johnson & Paxton, 1997

Type species: Protoblepharon rosenblatti Baldwin, Johnson & Paxton, 1997

Etymology: From the Greek protos (= first), and blepharon (= eyelid), in reference to the cladistic position of the genus as first in the lineage of flashlight fishes that occlude the light organ with an erectable shutter.

Protoblepharon is a genus of flashlight fishes known from the Pacific Ocean from around the Cook Islands (P. rosenblatti) and off of eastern Taiwan (P. mccoskeri).
